The Electrification Rebate Landscape Is More Generous Than Ever — But Shrinking Fast
Australia's federal and state governments are collectively spending billions to accelerate the transition from gas to electric. The incentive stack has never been higher — but it's designed to decrease annually, rewarding early movers and penalising procrastinators.

Federal Rebates (Available Nationwide)
1. Solar Panel STCs (Small-scale Technology Certificates)
The federal solar rebate reduces the upfront cost of solar panels based on expected energy production through to 2030. Your installer claims the STCs and deducts the value from your invoice — you pay the net price.

Key dates: Rebate reduces every January 1. Ends December 31, 2030. From October 2026, commercial systems up to 1MW will qualify for upfront STCs (previously capped at 100kW) — this is a massive expansion for businesses.
2. Federal Battery Rebate (Cheaper Home Batteries Program)
The federal battery rebate delivers approximately 30% off battery installation costs through STCs:

3. Heat Pump Hot Water STCs
Heat pump hot water systems qualify for STCs worth $800-$1,200 depending on system efficiency and location. This is separate from state incentives and stacks on top.

NSW Home Energy Saver is the standout program: up to $4,000 discount on heat pumps, solar, insulation, and efficient appliances PLUS a zero-interest loan up to $15,000 repayable over 10 years. Combined with federal STCs, a heat pump hot water system can cost as little as $1,500 out of pocket.

Victoria's gas ban (effective March 2027 for new buildings) makes electrification mandatory for all new residential and commercial construction. Existing buildings aren't required to electrify — but the economics are overwhelming when you stack VEU + federal STCs.

Why These Rebates Exist — And Why They Won't Last
The federal government has committed to 82% renewable electricity by 2030. State governments have legislated net-zero targets. Gas bans are rolling out (ACT already banned new gas connections in 2023, Victoria from March 2027). The rebates exist to accelerate this transition — but they're designed to phase out as adoption increases.
Every January 1, the STC multiplier drops. Every year, fewer certificates are issued per system. The battery rebate halves by 2028. State programs have fixed funding pools that close when exhausted.
